Biography
Dr Derek Tran is a Senior Exercise Physiology Fellow with the Heart Research Institute. He is also a Lecturer at Sydney Medical School and the Exercise Physiologist for the Adult Congenital Heart Service at the Department of Cardiology, Royal Prince Alfred Hospital
Derek completed his Bachelor of Applied Science (Exercise Physiology) in 2015 and was awarded his doctoral degree (PhD) without requiring any emendations by the University of Sydney School of Medicine (Central Clinical School) in 2022. He has also been a recipient of the prestigious Paediatric and Congenital Prize (2019) from the Cardiac Society of Australia and New Zealand (CSANZ).
His primary area of research is cardiopulmonary exercise testing and exercise physiology in people living with complex cardiopulmonary conditions such as congenital heart disease and pulmonary hypertension. He led the national consensus recommendations for exercise in adolescents and adults with congenital heart disease and is the co-coordinator of the world’s largest multi-centre congenital heart disease exercise clinical trial – The Congenital Heart Fitness Intervention Trial (CH-FIT).
Derek also teaches clinical exercise physiology in both the undergraduate and programs at the University of Sydney.
