The Heart Research Institute (HRI) is sponsoring a new Cardiovascular Postgraduate Scholarship under the Sydney Research Awards and Scholarships program.

The Scholarship is designed to encourage and support students in undertaking postgraduate qualifications at The University of Sydney in research around diagnosing, preventing or treating cardiovascular disease (CVD), the leading cause of death globally.

CVD refers to all the diseases of the heart and circulation, including heart attack, stroke, congenital heart disease and atrial fibrillation. Its incidence worldwide is increasing, in part due to the rising prevalence of ‘lifestyle diseases’ such as obesity and diabetes – major risk factors for CVD.

With CVD taking an estimated 17.9 million lives each year globally, the Scholarship will help advance critical research into fighting this devastating disease.

The Scholarship allows for a full-time student enrolled at The University of Sydney to apply for up to $40,000 per annum (up to three consecutive years) towards undertaking a PhD.

The winner of the Scholarship will be announced on Thursday, 2 June 2022 as part of Sydney Local Health District (SLHD) Innovation Week, of which HRI will be a platinum sponsor. The Scholarship will be presented by Dr Teresa Anderson AM, Chief Executive, SLHD and a representative of HRI.
