The Heart Research Institute (HRI) and the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute (VCCRI) formally partnered for the second time to host the 2018 Sydney Cardiovascular Symposium, 5–7 December at the Charles Perkins Centre, The University of Sydney.
This year’s Symposium was themed around Cardiovascular Disease in the Era of Obesity and Diabetes: Challenges and New Frontiers and explored the impact of the obesity epidemic and its consequences on cardiovascular health, from bench to bedside and back again.
The Hon Dominic Perrottet MP, NSW Treasurer and Minister for Industrial Relations officially opened the Symposium, while The Hon Brad Hazzard MP, NSW Minister for Health and Medical Research, presented the Symposium’s Early and Mid-Career Researcher Awards and the Rising Star Award.
Leaders in the cardiovascular research field presented the latest advances in discovery science and clinical research, and discussed novel approaches to deal with the obesity epidemic – from the latest nutritional science through exercise physiology to clinical intervention.
International speakers included Prof Ed Fisher (New York University), Prof Darrel Francis (Imperial College London), A/Prof Katey Rayner (Ottawa University) and Prof Jonathan Cohen (UT Southwestern), who also delivered the iconic Princesses’ Lecture. National speakers included leading researchers from the Garvan Institute of Medical Research, The George Institute for Global Health, Baker Institute, University of Adelaide, University of Melbourne, The University of Sydney, VCCRI and HRI.
As Australia’s premier cardiovascular research event, the Symposium aims to make the world’s best cardiovascular expertise accessible to all NSW researchers and facilitate state-wide collaboration to translate this expertise into clinical practice and establish NSW as the preeminent Australian leader in cardiovascular research.
